Newsletter.

Hello Everyone!!

I hope you’re all doing well, it feels like we’ve had an extremely grey start to the year, I just need a constant steady drizzle to feel like I’m back in England (oh… and a reduction in humidity of about 200%!)

I know some of you might have been wondering if you had fallen off our mailing list (what else would you be worrying about than reading newsletters from a psychotic turf woman?) but I’m here to reassure it’s not you, it’s me. We managed to get distracted late last year and the newsletters became one of those things I just kept forgetting – Janet’s pretty great at getting me out to spray weeds but she’s too far away to sit me down to write a witty informative on all things St. Augustine. So please accept my formal apology for the lack of emails about grass 🤪

That all being said, I’ll try to keep the rest short! I’m trying to get into the habit of posting more videos so that you can SEE what I’m talking about and hopefully empower you to begin diagnosing your own crazy lawn problems. Here are my (very awkward) videos of what you need to know for April: (click on the highlighted words to access the link)

1. Leave those evil temptress sprinkler controls alone (aka still no watering)

2. Winter weeds should be starting to die off and problematic weeds are starting to emerge, Virginia buttonweed and kyllinga are my biggest concern right now.

3. It’s possible sod worms may be a problem this year and recommend an application of beneficial nematodes that need to be applied before it gets too hot. Watch this for more information, and/or reply “Nematodes” to this email for pricing.

4. Keep Calm and Stay Patient – if you still have some bare spots here’s why we recommend NO SOD!  Compost 💩 and plugs 🔌 can be your new best friends.
Why I don’t recommend sod (unless you’re about to move house)

5. We’re already booking for summer compost top dressing so please let us know now if you’re interested.

An example of a lawn we have treated with compost top dressing once or twice a year for several years.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter! Please keep the bunnies off the lawn and hide all your Easter eggs in the shrubs and trees 😁

Watering

  •  Cup test! It’s really important to make sure that the sprinklers are hitting everything equally before it gets to the really hot weather
  • Sprinklers should still be off indefinitly.
  • If your grass is looking dry please let us know as this is an early warning sign of a problem
We have our own YouTube channel now (cringe) called Flaherty Lawns, if you find the clips helpful and even vaguely entertaining please let me know and I will keep doing them.
