Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone’s been enjoying the gloomy weather, nothing like a gray sky and intermittent rain to warm the heart! For those native Texans please note the appropriate way to enjoy the damp conditions is with a steaming cup of PG tips (English breakfast tea). Even my teenagers can be persuaded into a warm cuppa in this weather and they normally drink their tea iced (the horror to my poor English soul!)

Anyway, apologies for the lateness of the newsletter, but as aforementioned weather has changed conditions maybe it’s for the best. Below is a list of what you need to know for May:

– We’re just starting the second application of the year, please take a moment to reread our email of February 26th to familiarize yourself with the different service tiers so you know what to expect. Click here to read the email.
– Doveweed has started to emerge already, it’s early this year so another cause for concern, watch this video to help identify this pesky invasive weed, I know you can’t wait to start hand pulling!!
– We’re seeing a lot of problems with tree roots just below the surface effectively choking out the grass, this isn’t limited to trees of particular type or age so unfortunately no one is immune, check out this video for more information
– Kyllinga is a growing problem weed (I’m assuming it heard about doveweed and wanted to prove it was much more annoying). It normally takes multiple herbicide applications to kill, is hard to handpull, it particularly likes compacted soils and it survives year round, it’s quickly becoming the most important weed to identify and resolve, check out this video to help you spot it in your own lawn.
– We still have some summer top dressing spots in late summer, please let us know if interested, reply COMPOST for pricing.

Watering

  •  Cup test! It’s really important to make sure that the sprinklers are hitting everything equally before it gets to the really hot weather
  • Sprinklers should still be off indefinitly.
  • If your grass is looking dry please let us know as this is an early warning sign of a problem
We have our own YouTube channel now (cringe) called Flaherty Lawns, if you find the clips helpful and even vaguely entertaining please let me know and I will keep doing them.
