- Run sprinklers between 11pm – 3am and split the cycle to run twice with an hour or two gap – this will enable the grass and ground to absorb as much water as possible before the sun comes up (these directions apply to summer only).
- Weeds are still a huge problem and we’re noticing that many people aren’t able to identify kyllinga in particular until it’s gotten out of hand. (see HERE for a video showing kyllinga.) The most effective way to control weeds without harming the grass is to limit water, so the current heat wave makes it uniquely possible to do that! We’re still recommending to ONLY water when the grass looks visibly dry and not before (see HERE for a video of what dry grass looks like).
- My number one tip for the season is to walk your lawn, ideally at least once a week. Most problems that start now can be quickly resolved if they’re spotted early but it’s easy to miss problems if you only ever see the grass from the safety of your air conditioned window (I might be a little jealous but I promise this is good advice!) We haven’t seen any chinch bug cases yet but expect they’re poised, waiting to strike…
- We’re now scheduling compost top dressing for Fall! Now y’all know compost is my answer to every lawn ailment (including an unnecessarily hot June) but you can check your treatment history log to see if we’ve noted a specific concern that might need the extra help.
Have a wonderful July 4th!! May you eat many hot dogs, drink many mysterious red, white and blue drinks and watch many beautiful (but responsibly handled) fireworks!
